Acrobat Reader is required to view files with the PDF (Portable Document Format) extension. This format is popular because it is universal in the way it displays images and text. Presentations and instruction manuals are usually written in this format.
You will need to get Adobe Reader sooner or later. It is free and non-obtrusive. However, over the years this program has become slower and slower to open files, and the download is much larger. The software has added many features that are just not needed for simply viewing a file, and I suggest you take a look at the other PDF viewers in the Office Software section of this site.
